PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: by designer Bun Einchcomb
Bun Einchcomb shares her background in design & tells us about her recent Covent Garden project.
Tell us about your background in the design industry, what led to setting up your own studio?
I trained as a Graphic designer but soon realised it wasn’t the right fit. Interior design found me organically. I raised my family whilst moving round the world creating homes as I went. On returning to the UK I found myself working for an independent design studio locally, learned loads and fell in love with creating living spaces that connected with their owners.
One last stint living abroad and a shift of circumstances meant I could be the captain of my own ship and here I am still with a love of design, the process and the people.
What are your ‘go to’ destinations for independent designers and makers?
I like to keep an eye on articles highlighting new talent, visiting fairs and getting recommendations. You never know what’s just round the corner.
Tell us about this project - what was the brief?
This project was such a privilege to work on. The most prestigious residential building in Covent Garden with so much historic and architectural significance. No pressure!
It’s previous owners had embraced minimalism and every surface was white. Very striking but not inline with this family‘s needs. The brief was to introduce colour and make the large rooms feel cosy and inviting. A place to relax and feel like “home” in the centre of the busy city.
How do you approach building soft furnishings into your schemes?
Trying to describe this process is difficult I like my schemes to feel effortless and not too “designed”. There is no formula. Sometimes a scheme starts with the soft furnishings, if a fabric, a rug or a cushion might spark my imagination or maybe it’s the furniture or a wallpaper. So I guess I approach with trust and an open mind!
